The Variety Club of Buffalo Hosts 15th Annual ‘Celebrate America’ Event with Purple Heart Recipient and Free Terry Buchwald Concert

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 8/31/16

LANCASTER, N.Y. — Variety – The Children’s Charity of Buffalo and WNY will host its 15th annual ‘Celebrate America’ fundraiser on Friday, September 9th, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Variety Banquet Center and Club Room at 6114 Broadway in Lancaster, NY. A tribute to our local heroes will begin at 5:15 p.m.  Admission is free and open to all ages.

Variety will be honoring WNY hero Michael McMahon, a Purple Heart Marine veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as members of the Lancaster PD, in commemoration of 9/11 and our country’s servicemen and women. Local Elvis tribute artist Terry Buchwald will also be performing his Tribute to The King, including hits from Elvis Presley and other country favorites.  Attendees will be able to enjoy food, a beer tent, live music, dancing, prizes, and other fun at this festive event.

Variety’s ‘Celebrate America’ began in September 2001, just days after 9/11. The event had been planned as a Labor Day party for September 14th at the Southgate Plaza in Hamburg. Rather than cancel the event after the tragedy of 9/11, the organization quickly shifted gears, bought candles, and turned the event into a memorial. They also set up a Red Cross donation booth to raise money for victims of the attack. The event provided a space for the public to come together in solidarity, mourning, and support, and it was a successful hit. Last year the event had to move from the Southgate Plaza because of restrictions in the plaza.

Now held at the Variety Club Banquet Hall, ‘Celebrate America’ is still about coming together, honoring those who have sacrificed, and celebrating the bonds of community. “Celebrate America started as a program for our community to heal, and we are continuing this tradition of bringing the community together at the event’s new location,” said Carol McMahon, Variety’s Board President. All proceeds of the event benefit the Variety Kids Telethon. Ample parking will be available.
